INDIA CHRISTIAN MISSION CENTER (ICMC): SPONSORED CHILDS IMMEDIATE NEEDS

Neva Lily Esther, Dr Jay's daughter in Medical School, used her month-long holiday last month to assess the children at the Promised Land location.

She wrote, "I've been going to the Promised Land everyday as I am on holidays.  I had talks with the wardens, caretakers, the new manager and the doctor at the Promised Land on how to improve the living conditions of the children.  Here are a number of plans proposed for the betterment of the children..."

1.Cub-Board plan : There are 44 rooms in the Promised Land excluding the storeroom and the rooms for Wardens.

         44 rooms

         25 Children in 1 room

44 x 25 = 1100 Children

So there has to be 44 helpers (Care takers).

We are going to place two cub-boards in each room.

44 x 2 cub-board =  88 cub-board in total

          1 cub-board cost à Rs.4000

88 cub-board cost à 88 x Rs.4000

Rupees à 3,52,000.00

Rs.3,52,000  ÷ Rs. 43 =  8186 USA dollars

The purpose for buying cub-board :

Each child should have    2 sets of Uniform

                                       3 sets of Colour dress

                                      2 sets of  Night wear

2 sets of  Uniforms -       To wear it for school in alternate days.

(When the child wears one dress, other dress will be washed)

3 Sets of Colour dress -  1st colour dress to wear on Saturday and the 2nd colour

dress to wear on Sunday and 3rd colour dress to wear on special occasions.

So this 3 colour dress will be kept in the cub-board and will be distributed on Saturday, Sunday and special occasions. The cub-board will be locked and the care takers will have the key,   so the children don’t lose their clothes.

2 Sets of Night wear -      The children from Monday to Friday will be wearing

school uniforms from 9.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m. After 5’O clock in the evening, they can wear the 2 sets of night wear on alternative day one after the other.(The clothes which they already have will be used as night wear )

Thus we need two cub- boards for each room per 25 children:

1.  One to keep the 3 colour dresses.

2.     And the other cub-board to keep the uniforms and night wear.

Thus all the students will have equal number of dresses and it will be easy for the wardens to maintain the dresses neatly and to prevent the lose of  clothes.

2. Rack Plan:

To keep plate and tumblers, books and note books, school bag, . We need one Rack for each room.

                   One Rack will cost Rs.3000

So 44 rooms x 1 rack  = 44 Racks

                   So the total cost is = Rs.3000 x Racks 44 = Rs.132000

Rs.132000 ÷ Rs.43 = 3070 USA dollars

3. Electrical bell plan:-

To let the children know the time for prayer, school, lunch, afternoon section, time to play, time to study and sleep. We have planned to buy the four electrical bells in order to bring disciple.

Cost of 1 bell        =  Rs.1000

4 bells x Rs.1000   =  Rs.4000 ÷ Rs.43 = 93$

Dollar                    = 93 USA dollars

4. Clock Plan:-

Every room has to have a clock each.

Number of clocks needed  à   40 (40 rooms)

Cost of clock          = Rs.600

Rooms 40 x Rs.600 = 24,000  ÷ Rs.43 = 558$

Dollars                   = 558 USA dollars

{For your understanding : the second floor in the boy’s hostel has three big hall instead of 12 rooms, so two clock in the three big hall}

Total number of water drum needed à 34

 cost of 1 water drum = 600.

Dollars                       = 417 USA dollars

5. Plate, Tumbler & Bowl buying plan:-

1.       Cost of 1 Plate                = Rs.50

No. of plates needed       = 1500

Rs. 50 x 1500 Plates = Rs.75000 ÷ Rs.43 = 1744 USA dollars

2.       Cost of 1 Tumbler is       = Rs.25

No. of Tumblers  needed = 1500

=  Rs. 37500 ÷ Rs.43 = 872 USA dollars

3.       Cost of 1 Bowl is            = Rs.30

No. of Bowl needed        = 1500

                    Total cost of                   =  Rs.30 x 1500

=  Rs. 45000 ÷ Rs.43 = 1047 USA dollars

6.       Mirror Plan:-

To place mirrors in each room in the hostel.

Girls hostel à 12 Mirror (including 1 warden room)

Boys hostelà 28 Mirror (note: on the 2nd floor there are 3 big halls, so

   excluding 2 rooms)

Ground floor   à 10

1st floor    à 12

2nd floor  à  3 big hall (2 mirror in each room) 6 mirrors

[C]     TO BE BOUGHT TWICE IN YEAR

1. Mat plan :-

The old mats have worn out. So we have to replace them with new ones twice in a year

2 children sleep in one mat        =          1500 ÷ Rs.43 = 750 Mats + 100 for the workers

No of Mat needed           =          850 mats

For 1500 children = 1500 x Rs. 200 = 300000/ 43 = $6976

[E]. PLAN REGARDING NUTRITION

AND HEALTH

1. Vaccination  Plan:

Details about the vaccines:

   * Hepatitis B vaccine      -     Age limit : from 2 month baby to Adult age.

3 injections should be given. First two

injection will be given one after the other and

the third injection will be given with an interval

            of six months.

    * Typhoid vaccine         -   Age limit:  2 years to adult age.

-         Childrens should be vaccinated once in

     3 years

   * MMR Vaccine              -   Age limit : Male    - 9 months to 5 years

Female - 9 months  to adult age

I have introduced the head of the Snegam charitable trust to my Dad. They had a talk. He stated that it was recognized by government of India and they have a couple of Doctors and nurses to do the job and they accepted to Vaccinate at a less reasonable price This project is already informed to the Doctor in the Promised land and he would divide the children according to their age and the required vaccine.

Hepatitis B - Below 10 years Rs. 25/ per dose    ( Actual price Rs . 50)

Above 10 years Rs. 45/per dose     (Actual price Rs . 100)

( So three doses are needed for each child )

Typhoid Vaccine - Rs. 45  ( Actual price Rs.100 )

MMR Vaccine - Rs. 60  ( Actual price Rs.100 )

So if your team from America comes in June , in their presence the vaccination can be done . They can supervise and see to that all the children are vaccined.

2.  The Vitamin tablet plan:-

As you already know that the Vitamin tablet

Multivitamin on (Monday)

 Iron tablet (Wednesday)

Fish liver oil tablet (Friday) is being given after dinner in a week. This plan will be continued.

3. Diet Plan:-

Two eggs will be given in a weeks. Meat will be served once a week to the children. In the evening after school the children will be having something like biscuits, beans, fruits etc to eat as tiffin, barely rice porriage will also be given More vegetables will be added in their curry items. Milk (cows) will be provided for little children.

4. Horlick’s Plan :-

The children from 1st to III std will be having Horlicks to drink in the evening everyday.

No of children from standard I to V         =  500 children

                 1 bottle of Horlicks =   Rs.190

So, for one day, 10 bottles of Horlicks are needed

So for 15 days  we need = 150 bottles

I50 x 190 =Rs. 28500

28500 ÷ Rs.43 = 663 USA dollars

If we are going to give Horlicks, we should be mixing it with milk. So it will be best for us to buy powder milk.

                   1 pack of milk powder = Rs.75/kg

No of milk powder needed per day = 25 pack

                   25 pack cost 25 x Rs.75 = Rs.1875

                   So for 15 days x Rs.1875 = Rs. 28125 ÷ Rs.43 = 654 USA dollars

So for 30 days  = 1308 USA dollars

5. We are going to send the well water for treatment to see (culture)  whether the water is pure. ( to let you know)

6. Bleaching powder is being spread on the mud in the ground in order to kill microbes and control further infections to children.( to let you know)

[F]      THE CHANGES THAT WILL BE

TAKING PLACE  IN HOUSE OF PEACE

1. Roll number plans: -

A four digit roll number will be given to a child.

·        This roll number will be recorded in the Head office, Salem along with his/ her name.

·        This roll number will be given to the sponsors along with the child name.

·        This roll number will be written in a piece of white cloth with a marker pen and will be stitched in the clothes of the children, in order to identify the children’s cloth and to prevent lose of clothes by the children.

·        This roll number will be written in the slippers, brush, bag, plate, note books.

·        If the child goes away from the hostel after one or two years to their home, another newly admitted child will be placed in that number. It will be informed to the respective sponsors immediately and the reason of why the child left the orphanage will be explained clearly to the Sponsors. There is a law according to the Indian Penal Court that the relationship between the child and the child’s relative should not be broken at any cost because we would be able to feed the child upto a certain age only, after that the child will return to his/her relatives and stay with them and get connected with them in the rest of the life. So when a child leaves the orphanage due to any reason, another child will be replaced in that number and the sponsorship will continue.

2. Dhobi Plan (Dhobi - a person who washes the clothes)

About 6 Dhobi’s will be appointed to wash the children’s clothes and they will be paid separately as per total number of  clothes. Thus the care taker will now no longer have to wash the children’s clothes, instead they can pay more attention to maintain the children’s belongs and their health, in sweeping and cleaning the rooms, and helping in the kitchen in their free time.

CONCLUSION:

At present the ratio of children to the care taker will be 25:1. As we get more care taker to work at the Promised Land. The ratio of children to care taker will be reduced to 20:1 as your wish.

When your team from America comes in June or July, they can see the changes that are taking place in the living conditions of the children at the Promised Land and I have spoke with the manager of how to get all these plans done successful.

God cares

J.Neva Lily Esther
