Observations on Medical at the Promised Land

by Catlin Goss, MD and Seattle Rotarian from a recent trip to ICMC in Feb/March

Dr Jay has done a truly amazing  job. His energy, kindness, faith and leadership were most evident.

  1. 1,600 orphans, feeding them three times per day

  2. Raising much of the food on site

  3. Negotiating with a not so kind bureaucracy

  4. Thinking of environmental ways to do things, such as solar power

  5. Making education and discipline priority

  6. Providing training for pastors throughout India

  7. The existing buildings and the future plans are spectacular

The medical care was pretty rudimentary and needs work.  They need a better public health system.  There is danger of an outbreak of  a waterborne or epidemic illness... Good water testing and protection, sanitation and constant vigilance are essential.  Meningitis, TB, typhoid, hepatitis, cholera, salmonella, polio and malaria are just a few problems that come to mind.

The two nurses, R. Rathna DNA and S Grokila DNA were dedicated and wonderful but had no real equipment, drugs or resources such as internet access.  I would increase their budget. a lot.  I know there was a doctor on the way.  I gave them my copy of Where There is No Doctor which they appreciated.

I had a wonderful time there.  I have a big list of names to find sponsors for. Especially Mani, Lavenla and Gita.  I hope I can continue to support the project along with the Rotary club.

Remember Sarah Zook?  Check out www.sarahinindia.com

Sarah's three months in India at ICMC last year confirmed her God-given desire to go back to India as a long-term career.

Sarah writes, "How do you take a vision the Lord has placed on your heart and put it into words?  How do you take what is larger than this world, incomprehensible aside from the Spirit, impossible without Jesus- and write a paragraph? ... Just as Christ became one with us to reach out to us, so must we become one with those who are hurting, broken, and desolate (as we too once were) to show them Jesus.

In a broad sense, this is the vision.  Henri Nouwen once said, 'It is that which is most personal that is also most universal'. On a more tangible level, the Lord has given me a heart for India, for those in extreme poverty, and for kids.  So what now?"

Sarah is pursuing training, learning Hindi, and investigating partnership with Servants for Asia's Poor.   Find out why she's afraid to fall of the face of the earth, her thoughts on American Accent Training, things to keep you 'In the Know', and her policy on accepting marriage proposals after eating something she cooked...all on her website www.sarahinindia.com

Can You Guess What This Building Was and Is Now?

Photo below LEFT:  In 1990, a one-story schoolroom.

Photo below RIGHt:  In 2007, a five story self-supporting, revenue-generating private elementary school that allows orphans to attend for free -- also set up for future Bachelors in Education college (pending certification) and high school (waiting to buy the government required one-acre of land...need $50,000 more).

Yes, you got it.  It's the St. Basil school in Salem.  Marty Isaac from Australia writes, "I remember the first time we had church in there.  After we came out Jay says to me, 'I'm going to build a five-story L-shaped building just there.  And I thought to myself, yeah right, and where is the money coming from?  Well the rest is God's history".

Update from Mrs Christy

“In God we make our boast all day long and we will praise Your Name forever.”
Psalm 44:8

The good Lord enabled us to do His work during this month too. His grace upon us was so great. On the third of February we had a special prayer meeting for those who write their board exams in March ’07.

From the 5th to 10th all the practical exams for XII students were over. 20 children of the House of Peace are writing their +2 exams. This month we had no youth camp as all the high school children had their III Mid Terms Exam. For X & XII Revision and Model exams were conducted throughout this month.

3rd Mid term exams results were published in the last week of this month. Almost every child did  the exams well.

Dr. Jay attended the inauguration of a Catholic Church at Udayapatti on 10.02.’07.

He was honoured by the Bishop of Salem on that occasion.

Mr. & Mrs. Tim Davis and their team arrived Salem on 13.02.’07. Dr. Goss did a very good job for our children. Mr. Richard and Mr. Tim Davis taught at Timothy School. Mrs. Tim presented an evangelistic program to our children with the help of two Belgium friends who arrived at our place on 15.02.’07. This program was fantastic.

Timothy school graduation took place on 20.02.’07. Rev. Robert Sigh, one of the Senior Pastors of A.G Church was the chief guest along with our USA friends. Robert Sigh’s message was wonderful to every Timothy student. On that day special chicken briyani was served to all the Timothy students and our children at the Promised Land. Timothy students were so happy to receive their certificates and T.A.

Dr. Jay set out for Madras on that day itself regarding Teacher Training Institute and came back from Madras on 21.02.’07. Mr. Tim, Mr. Richard and Dr. Goss left for Vellore on 21.02.’07. As it (21.02.07) was Ash Wednesday we have a special service in the evening. On the following Friday too, we had special service meditating on His crucifixion. Mrs. Janet Davis birthday was celebrated on 22.02.’07 at our centre. All the children were very happy. On 23.2.’07 Mrs. Janet Davis left for Madras. In the evening of the same day Mr. Warren Hall arrived our place, and he left our place in the morning of 26.02.’07.

X practical exams were over on 26.02.’07. Our daughter Neva’s board exams for second year of medical school (II MBBS) were conducted throughout this month. She did very well.

The 27th of February was my dear mother’s first death anniversary; we had a prayer meeting on that day. Dr. Jay gave a fantastic message on ‘Resurrection’ on that time. All our staff members, teachers, our friends and relatives participated in it. On 28.02.’07 the St. Basil school children went on a picnic to a Dream Land and enjoyed the same.

This month I was teaching English Grammar for X students of Salem Centre. It was very useful to them. The ladies prayer meet was continued throughout this month. We are so thankful to every sponsor.

May the dear Lord bless you continually!

Yours in His service,

Yours in Him,

Mrs. J. Christy

Secretary

What's Scott really thinking?  Choose one:

a.  Someone told him he was going to have to eat dog for dinner.

b.  Someone told him he was going to hand out cookies to another 1,000 children that day.

c.  Someone told him that someone already gave $50,000 to get a high school in Salem -- but they still needed another $50,000

You can give to LAND, AGRICULTURE, HEALTH and CHILDCARE, CHURCH PLANTING TRAINING, and EDUCATION:

Here's a few projects to think about . . .

1.  WATER PURIFICATION PROJECT for Promised Land and Eden Garden.  Cost/possibilities being investigated.

2. BENCHES/DESKS for middle and high school for St. Graham's Memorial Schools.  Right now they sit on the floor:  $12,000

3.  ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS AND SUBMARINE MOTORS for the five wells used for rice cultivation.  Right now they use diesel which is expensive:  $15,000  (This may not put a smile on their face, but it will put food in their tummy).

4.   EIGHTY CUPBOARDS for the children's rooms to keep their clothes and books.  Right now they use little trunks:  $8,000

5.  BUILDING PROJECTS such as finishing the new boys hostel, separating the elementary and high school at St Grahams, and a dining hall for the boys.  $$$

6.  LAND.  Expansion of St Basil School in Salem.  Also, there are still pockets of land at the Promised Land in between the main road and the Yercaud mountains that still need to be bought to use the land to the fullest extent.  $$$

THANK YOU!  For generous donations in addition to sponsorship giving that helped cover necessary expenses and  ongoing projects!
